The film centres on the Marino family, whose lives are thrown into disarray when Mary (Marsha Gay Harden), the mother, is diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Mary's condition worsens, leading to paranoia, delusions, and erratic behaviour. Her husband, John (Joe Pantoliano) struggles to cope, torn between love for his wife and the need to protect his son, Chris (Devon Gearhart). Young Chris witnesses his once happy family unravelling and must navigate the confusing world of his mother's illness.

John tries to maintain a sense of normalcy for Chris, while also seeking support groups and navigating the complexities of treatment options.

Despite the hardships, Canvas is ultimately a story of love and resilience. John and Chris find strength in each other, and their bond deepens as they face Mary's illness together. The film offers a poignant reminder of the importance of compassion, understanding, and the enduring power of family love.
